New IBM Connections Pattern for IBM PureSystems Now Available

View Comments
On December 9, IBM announced an updated PureSystems Pattern for IBM Connections 5.0 as well as a brand new pattern for IBM Connections Content Manager 5.0. Both patterns have been built to reduce the installation and configuration time down to a couple of hours by deploying a pre-configured system into a PureSystems environment. IBM PureSystems combine the flexibility of a general purpose system, the elasticity of cloud and the simplicity of an appliance. Learn more about IBM PureSystems here.

Both patterns are based on the latest versions of IBM Connections and IBM Connections Content Manager and while the IBM Connections Content Manager Pattern is a brand new offering, IBM Connections 5 Pattern is a replacement for the previous IBM Connections Hypervisor Edition 4.0. Customers with entitlement to the Hypervisor pattern will be entitled to an upgrade to the new IBM Connections Pattern 5.0.

IBM Insight is now two weeks away.  I'll have the opportunity to go this year and update the audience on IBM Connections and what we are doing there when it comes to the combination of content management + team collaboration.

This year, I'll be co-presenting with my colleague, Firas Yasin, one of our social business advocates and an expert when it comes to adoption, business value and content management.

Our session is on Monday right after the keynote at Lagoon J.  Last night, I was going through the attendee list for our session and found this enrollee record:

The IBM Connections 5.0 Reviewer's Guide is Now Available in the iBook Store

View Comments
By now you are probably aware that the IBM Connections 5.0 Reviewer's Guide is available as shared by one of my teammates in the product management team, Albert Nichols.

For a while now, I've been wondering how we can make this more widely available and perhaps add even more value to this great asset.  Earlier in the year (if I remember correctly), I had heard that Apple had made iBooks Author a free app and decided to take that for a spin and see what I could do with it. And given the recent announcement of the Apple and IBM partnership, I figured why not!

To my surprise, it was very simple to take the work that Albert (and the rest of the PM team had done) and import it into iBooks Author and add some dynamic elements to it. As you may know, the Reviewer's Guide covers a lot of the functionality within IBM Connections, as well as our different integration points into ECM, Notes, Microsoft Outlook, SharePoint, mobile, etc. Therefore, I thought that a good way to make the guide more dynamic would be to incorporate all the various demos directly into the book.

My experience with iBooks Author was pretty positive. It only took a few minutes to convert the Reviewer's Guide into iBook format. Then, it took me about 5-6 hours to reorganize the content into iBook chapters, add the demos and interactive screenshots, and publish it to the iTunes store.  During the publishing process, I even discovered that iTunes Producer already integrates with Aspera, an IBM company for super fast file transfer.

Therefore, you now have a super easy way to get the Reviewer's Guide, access it offline, and even share with your peers. Go ahead and download the IBM Connections 5.0 Reviewer's Guide from the iBook Store and let me know what you think. I'm curious to know if this is valuable and if you would like to see more of these in the future.

PS.  There's 1 page that didn't come out correctly, but I'll let you find it.

Download the New IBM Connections 5.0 Desktop Plugins

View Comments
The new IBM Connections Desktop plug-ins for Microsoft Windows have just been released to our app catalog.

There's a couple of things that I would like to call out here. First, IBM Connections 5.0 will be available for download next week. This is the first time that we have released the desktop plugins before the actual new server code is available. This is because the new desktop plugin also adds new features even if you are not using 5.0.

Second, this is yet another simultaneous release for cloud and on-prem. Cloud customers can download the update directly from the "Apps - Downloads" page within Connections.

Third, as I mentioned earlier in the week, this is the plug-in that adds File Sync capabilities for those that are using IBM Connections 5.0 or later.

Fourth, this release also adds access libraries from IBM Connections Content Manager. Of course, this was already possible before but required installing a separate plugin. In this release, you now install only one plugin simplifying the deployment and adoption process.

Lastly, but not least, this release also adds the ability to browse and access community folders.

Here's a demo that walks through the File Sync capabilities:

So go get it and download today!

As I mentioned a few weeks back, I'm going to join the IBMer who fired himself, Luis Suarez, so if you haven't yet, send us your toughest digital business question.

There's one more item that I want to highlight.  If you are going all the way to Prague, then you most definitely can't miss the Luis Suarez's MasterClass: From Adoption to Adaptation, From Enablement to Engagement.

Announcing IBM Connections 4.5 IFR2: Advanced content editing for all!

View Comments
Now that you know how the IBM Connect 2014 OGS demo was built, let's get into the nitty gritty and recap the announcements that were made.

Shortly after the keynote, I had the opportunity to deep dive into the roadmap for IBM Connections together with our lead architect. So what did we talk about ?

Well, it turns out that a big item that we talked about was today's announcement.

Today, we are announcing our first delivery for 2014: IBM Connections 4.5 IFR2. This release provides an entitlement change to allow all of our IBM Connections 4.5+ customers to use an advanced rich text editor.

This advanced editor streamlines content creation allowing users to focus on creating and sharing content and not on formatting.  This in turn accelerates adoption and usage across the enterprise. The new advanced rich text editor adds several features such as:
  • High fidelity copy/paste from Microsoft Word or a web browser
  • Inline spell checking as-you-type, with alternatives and synonyms
  • Embedding of social media links
  • Track changes and commenting
  • Hyperlink checking
  • Content templates
  • and more...
Here's a quick demo so you can see it in action:

The download for the new editor will be available on Thursday February 13th when we officially eGA IBM Connections 4.5 IFR2. This new editor is powered by Ephox which some of you may already be using inside WebSphere Portal and/or Domino. Update 14/February/2014: The Ephox team has put together a new video:

How's that for starting the year on a positive note ? I'll share more about the announcements from IBM Connect in upcoming posts.

How To Migrate from Quickr to IBM Connections Content Manager

View Comments

Earlier this year, we released IBM Connections 4.5. The big focus of IBM Connections 4.5 is the new Content Manager add-on which brings the power of content management and combines it with the power of the IBM Connections social platform. The add-on is part of the core IBM Connections installer so there's nothing else to install!

Content Manager:

  • Combines the ease of use of social tools with the power of a structured hierarchy.
  • Includes document check-in and check-out, version control, approval routing, metadata, taxonomy, document types and nested folders.
  • Makes content management tools as easy to use as social networking tools.

This add-on also allows Quickr customers to upgrade to a better experience. To facilitate this transition, we've provided a migration tool to our customers at no extra cost (as you can see in slide 18 below). This allows them to take their libraries from Quickr Domino or Quickr for Portal and migrate them to IBM Connections Content Edition. We've also made a RedBook available: Making the move to IBM Connections 4.5 and IBM Connections Content Manager.

To download the migration tool for Quickr for Portal, click here.

The documentation for the tool is here in our public wiki so you can start seeing how it's going to work. If you are interested in getting access send me a note and we'll get you going!

IBM Connections Plug-in For Apache OpenOffice 4.0 Now Available

View Comments

As promised a couple of weeks ago, with the release of Apache OpenOffice 4.0, we have now updated the plug-in for IBM Connections, IBM's Enterprise Social Network (ESN) and premier file sharing and team collaboration platform.

This new plug-in takes advantage of the new sidebar introduced in OpenOffice 4.0 to give you access to your files. From there, you open files directly without downloading, share them with others without having to open a browser, organize in a folder, search for intellectual capital and more.

Because OpenOffice can edit Microsoft Office documents too, this allows me to save money and be productive. And of course, if you want to edit OpenOffice files on your iPad, you can do that too!

For those of you using Macs, you'll be happy to know that this new update to the plugin also adds Mac support. Check out the screenshot below:

To download the plug-in go here. If you haven't upgraded to OpenOffice 4.0, do it today!

IBM Connections 4.5 Reviewer's Guide is Ready for Download

View Comments

The news about IBM Connections 4.5 keep on rolling. Today, I'm happy to communicate that the Reviewer's Guide for IBM Connections 4.5 is ready for download.

If you haven't read one of our Reviewer's Guide before and you are not sure what it is, here's the description:

This Reviewer's Guide provides a brief summary of the applications that are included in IBM Connections 4.5. It is important to note that these applications can be used within an organization as needed—all together or as individual applications. Capitalizing on a flexible and modular architecture, organizations may start with a single application and add other applications when they choose. As in previous releases of IBM Connections, applications can be installed easily and naturally fit into the user experience, so it is easy to expand as needed.

Therefore, if you are looking for an end-to-end review of the features in the release and it's capabilities, this a great document to go through, all 94 pages of it. We've also included tons of screenshots as well.

I have embedded the document here so you can preview it:

Replay of Monthly ICS Webcast featuring IBM Connections 4.5 &Connections Content Manager Webcast Now Available

View Comments

Yesterday I presented at the monthly IBM Collaboration Solutions webcast. The topic? Of course: IBM Connections 4.5 and IBM Connections Content Manager.

As Joyce Davis posted late last night, the replay is available for those that missed it (tip: you should never miss a Joyce Davis webcast) or for those who want to see it again.

There was a technical glitch with my computer where it decided to alert me that I had run out of disk space (must be all those demo movies!). After several minutes, I was able to recover and you can enjoy the fun below. I was also very happy to know that more than 80% of the attendees were planning on upgrading to version 4.5 to enjoy the new content management capabilities. Remember, the download of 4.5 will be available this Friday!

Webcast replay:

I have also shared the presentation over at SlideShare:

Replay of the IBM Connections 4.5 Launch Webcast Now Available

View Comments

Last week was a busy one with the launch of IBM Connections 4.5, and the enhanced IBM Connections plug-in for Microsoft Outlook. To kick off the launch, we had a webcast to showcase the business value of IBM Connections 4.5 and IBM Notes 9 called: From Liking to Leading - Transforming your Business with a Next Generation Platform for Social Business.

If you missed the webcast, or you want to watch it again, you can do so here (even if you hadn't registered for the original webcast). In the replay you also have the option to download the broadcast presentation from the “Resources” widget of the broadcast replay. I had fun getting ready for the launch and creating the demo of IBM Connections 4.5 where I focused on the importance of mobile and real-time collaboration.

Also a quick reminder that if you are looking for the two demos that were shown during the webcast, you can access those quickly here.

Here's a storify that summarizes the webcast:
