Ok.. so sounds like we have some consensus here.

I'm going to create a widget that can get deployed to Lotus Connections Profiles. This widget will let users enter their ping.fm credentials and it will continuously poll for users' status updates and update Connections accordingly.

I guess there is not a simple solution for this one. One solution could be writing a EAR file doing what Mark suggested.

So the approach would be then cerate a widget where people could leave the users information for ping.fm.

And the EAR file (application) should loop through the WIFGET_PREF_SETTING table to find the settings for ping.fm retrieve the status from ping.fm and set that status on the users profile. This is quite secure.

Its only an bumby road to walk :-)

Mark, that's an interesting approach. Ping.fm does provide a feed of the last 25 status updates, so I could query that and then import those updates into Connections. The challenge would be providing a UI where users can enter their ping.fm username/password. Perhaps through a widget in the Profiles page ?

What about having LC grab the feed from ping.fm (they have one?) and do the update periodically? Guess the polling idea is typically bad but I suspect the Twitter->FB app on FB does this?

Most of us couldn't convince our network guys to poke the hole, let alone plug it with chewing gum! :)
